Cornelius Carr
CEO
Cornelius “John” Carr, born and raised in Middlesbrough, England, is a former professional boxer whose grit, resilience, and uncompromising spirit propelled him from humble beginnings to championship glory. Over an impressive career spanning 38 fights, with 34 wins, he captured the British Super Middleweight Title in 1994 and the WBF World Middleweight Title in 1999, cementing his legacy in British boxing.
Carr’s journey began at just eleven years old at the Grangetown Amateur Boxing Club, where he trained under Marty Turner, a coach who quickly became a mentor and surrogate father. Turner recognized something special in the young fighter and made a bold prophecy: that John Carr would one day become a champion. This belief would shape the course of John’s life.
At eighteen, when he turned professional under the guidance of renowned boxing promoter Frank Warren, John adopted his father’s name, Cornelius—a symbolic step marking the beginning of his pursuit of a lifelong dream. His style inside the ring was defined by tenacity, discipline, and an indomitable will, qualities that carried him from local gyms to national titles. Through sheer persistence and refusal to quit, Cornelius fulfilled both his childhood ambition and Marty Turner’s early prophecy.
Outside the ring, Cornelius built a respected reputation in the world of film and performance. In 1997 he worked on the critically acclaimed film The Boxer, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, assisting in the choreography of the film’s realistic fight sequences. He later completed a professional stunt and combat course, specializing in unarmed combat and boxing choreography, further enhancing his on-set expertise. Cornelius also appeared in and choreographed elements of Morrissey’s music video Boxers, adding another notable credit to his career.
Today, at fifty-six, Cornelius is a highly sought-after personal trainer and the founder of a popular state-of-the-art boxing fitness gym in Swansea. His innovative training methods blend boxing fundamentals with advanced fitness techniques, attracting clients ranging from everyday enthusiasts to celebrity actors and musicians. In 2023, he was honored with the Welsh Enterprise Award for Best Local Boxing Trainer in South Wales. His passion for the sport also lives on through his two sons, both competitive boxers whom he has proudly coached.
Cornelius is now deeply invested in the development of Cornelius, the feature film inspired by his remarkable life. With his firsthand experience, technical knowledge, industry contacts, and history of on-screen combat choreography, he brings authenticity and insight vital to the film’s success. Most importantly, he hopes his story of perseverance through adversity will inspire others to believe in their potential.
“I’ve always said, if I can do it, anyone can,” Cornelius reflects. “I was persistent. I was committed. I just refused to give up. Fortunately for me, I was blessed with a fighting spirit.”
